Phoenix, AZ - Since taking office early this year, Maricopa County Sheriff Russ Skinner has remained steadfast in his commitment to maintaining the trust of the community in the agency he has served for over 30 years and now leads. That commitment includes a focus on MCSO’s public safety mission and a culture that emphasizes ethical and accountable law enforcement. That commitment includes working to reach full and effective compliance with the federal court orders stemming from the Melendres case.
The Sheriff’s Office has made considerable progress toward achieving that goal as the independent Court-appointed Monitor issued their report that as of the third quarter of 2023 (July 1, 2023 – September 30, 2023), MCSO is at 100% compliance with the foundational portion (“phase 1”) of the 2013 order. The implementation portion of the 2013 order (“phase 2”) has gone from 80% compliance in January 2023 to 93%. Further achievements since the third quarter 2023 will be captured in reports yet to be issued by the Court-appointed Monitor.
The Monitor also agreed that MCSO is in full and effective compliance with 161 paragraphs of the Order (phase 1 & 2). This means that MCSO has been in compliance with these paragraphs continuously for at least three (and often more) consecutive years. “I’m very proud of the hard work and professionalism our employees have displayed to make these accomplishments possible,” said Sheriff Russ Skinner. “Our commitment to our community is our number one priority and the efforts we continue to make every day to ensure we enforce the laws with integrity and respect reflects that.”
